How do you experience all these different ways of cultivating photographic art?
In a natural way: everything started almost as a game, indulging an absolute passion for photography as a powerful expressive element.
I love to photograph, for me photography is therapeutic, it helps me face the everyday, interpreting it and trying to decipher it.
The ardent of passion then seek out their peers and thus was born the Alpido Association, a place of growth and sharing between enthusiasts, the exhibitions, because the photographic process ends with the printing of the photos, the festival an extraordinary moment of international artistic exchange and the hub rroma.street to help promote the culture of street photography globally.
Rome holds a central place in your photography and in your life. What are the elements that make this city so attractive to photographers over time?
Rome, along with Athens, represents a fundamental part of human history; its appeal is incomparable. I am in love with my city, its extraordinary sights, its treasures and its people.
I have traveled and travel a lot but as Horace said in the Carmen Seculare " You will see no greater thing in the world than Rome."
Τhe International Photography Festival of Rome (Rome Photo Lab) is truly a great celebration of photography. Would you like to share with us some information about this year's event?
Rome Photo Lab is organized by associazione Alpido with the collaboration of Instagram’s community IgersRoma, Riprendiamoci Roma and RRStreet International Hub. In its first, in 2023, it involved 100 photographers and its final exhibition – hosted in the historical complex of Biblioteca Ambrosiana – was visited by more than 2000 people. The satellite events connected with the main exhibition around Rome attracted many other visitors, most notably through our stand in the summer fair “Lungo il Tevere” (along the Tiber’s shore), but also with lectures and photo walks.
In September 2024 (2nd Edition) the Rome Photo Lab (RPL) brought together the talent and artistic visions of both seasoned and emerging street photographers from over 30 countries at Villa Altieri in Rome. The festival attracted extensive media coverage including national papers and international publications. In addition to exhibition and networking opportunities, the festival provided talks, workshops, photo walks and feedback to excite image makers, inspire them and further develop their talents.
This attracted national and international attendees. Many visitors were from the local area and were delighted to have the opportunity to visit Villa Altieri and many locations in the center of Rome. In September 2025, we are proposing 3 days to run the Festival in Villa Altieri, in addition to the exhibition which can run for a week within the public realm of Villa Altieri main floor and terrace.
Associazione Alpido was established in 2020 with the aim to contribute to the enrichment of the cultural and artistic environment in Rome through the promotion of quality photography. Before the Rome Photo Lab Alpido organized 7 photography collective exhibitions in the historical Via Margutta. Besides, the association regularly organizes photography courses, photo walks, workshops, seminars and meetings with authors. The community is a meeting point between professional and amateur photographers, but also tourist guides, schools and people passionate about photography from all over the world.
How did the founding of the Rromastreet collective come about and what are its central artistic goals?
Rroma.Street was born from the passion of some friends for street photography and from the courses done in the Association, since 2020, on street and documentary photography.
Rome lacked an important hub with an international vocation.
We therefore involved international curators from the beginning, spoke only in English, created connections with other collectives and hubs. Within a short time, thanks to the quality of the work proposed, online and in exhibitions, it has become a reliable and authoritative reference point for all lovers of the genre.
Upcoming goals, in addition to exhibitions and the Festival, are editorial. We are working on it.
A large part of your photographic work is street photography. How would you describe the contemporary perspectives of this photographic genre?
Street is having a golden moment, it is perhaps also because you just need to get out on the street. But from there to getting a good photo is a long way. It takes practice. I always recommend observing a lot and shooting less. The prospects for those who want to master the genre, in AI Era, can only go in the direction of quality and content. Otherwise, you're cooked.
Do you prefer certain ways of taking photos on the street? Do you have a favorite camera?
I love flash photography, but I don't have a genre; I shoot what I like and what piques my interest.
I have 4 cameras but I don't have a favorite, in fact I think the medium /tool in street is relative.
Do you remember the first time you picked up a camera? How did you feel?
Not well. I was a reporter for small newspapers where there was no budget. There was no money for the photographer and I was asked to bring not only the text but also the photo. I improvised, but then I took a course to start to understand something. From there I didn't stop.
How would you generally describe your relationship with photography and what do you hope for your future with photographic art?
I said it at the beginning: for me, photography is therapeutic and it is the tool that helps me understand reality and interpret it. I enjoy it, it amuses me, it distresses me at times: it is my life. I can’ t imagine a future of mine without photography.
Pierluigi Meduri is an Italian journalist and photographer. Born in Rome, where he lives and draws the greatest inspiration for his work, he is a lover of the art of photography in all its forms, but it is in street photography that he finds the tool through which he tries to understand and explain the world in his own way. More intense and beautiful, through people.
He is president of the Alpido Photographic Association, co-organizer of the RomePhotoLab, the International Photography Festival of Rome. He is the founder of RRoma.street - International Street Photography Hub based in Rome; he is a member of Street Badass and Kalopsia Collective.
He has exhibited in several collective exhibitions in the Italian capital: seven in Via Margutta at the “Monogramma” Contemporary Art Gallery; at the French Cultural Institute Saint Louis, in the foyes of the prestigious Parioli Theatre, during the historic event “Lungo il Tevere” and at the Galleria della Biblioteca Angelica.
In 2022 he received the special mention for photography at the Open Art Award. In 2023 he obtained first place at the Paris - Street Photography Awards in the “Street Fashion” category, third place in the “Street Portrait” category and two special mentions in the “Use of Flash” and “Contrast - Lights and Shadows” categories. In 2024 he exhibited his work “MadamAbat”, in the United Arab Emirates during Xposure and in the same year he was a finalist at the Brussels Street Photo Festival. In December 2024 he was finalist at Fuji Moment Street Photo Awards in Poland. He has also exhibited in Milan. A collection of his images was published in a special edition of Docu Magazine. His work has also been published in FishEye magazine and The Pictorial List.
As part of the ongoing Jubilee of Hope, he is exhibiting 5 of his images throughout the year in the 25 selected by the Holy See on the theme "Open Doors" - At the precious Casina Pio IV in the Vatican gardens, each photographer has freely interpreted the theme of ‘open doors’, and a variety of portals – and the human beings that use them – are on display in the images. In one of his shots, a nun stands in front of a large archway in the wall flanking St Peter’s Square.
*Photographs of his were presented on March 20th 2025 at the Italian Cultural Institute of Athens by Evdoxia Fasoula as part of the closing ceremony of the photographic exhibition “Italia. Viaggio nella fotografia” organized by the IFocus magazine and curated by Dora Lavazou.
